I should perhaps re-assure readers that the title of this post isn’t referring to the somewhat famous doomsday clock – that counts down the number of minutes to midnight – with midnight representing the end of all things – where mankind succeeds in wiping itself out of existence. For one thing, I’m guessing the doomsday clock can’t get past midnight – because if it ever reaches it, it won’t exist any more.
I’ve just spent the better part of the evening populating Notion with all manner of notes, records, and who knows what else – in the hope of having everything stored somewhere that I can access from anywhere. And yes, this is a rebellion against the default apps on the Mac and iPhone, that don’t play nicely with anything else.
And before you start, I’ve pretty much tried everything over the last few years – Obsidian, Bear, Things, ToDo, Monday, Apple Notes – you name it, I’ve tried it. Notion wins – for now – purely because it just seems to work. I’m deliberately not trying to be clever in my use of it either (Notion is famously flexible).
Did I mention that I transferred the backup of every blog post I’ve ever written into Notion too? Have you fallen asleep reading this yet? Actually… it’s not every blog post I’ve ever written – not quite – because I’m pretty sure the first two or three years – prior to 2003 – are still missing. There’s half a chance they might be on ZIP disks in a bag in the attic, but accessing them means getting the iMac back out, the ZIP drive, and wiring it all up again. Not happening any time soon. Maybe one day.
Burning the candle at both ends is getting a bit ridiculous. I haven’t stopped this week – or all last weekend – repeatedly falling into bed at 2am, and getting back up at 8am the next morning to do it all again. I did take an hour out this evening to watch a TV show with my other half – I need to do that more often. I need to get out of the house more too – at lunchtime today I had planned to go for a walk into town, but then I didn’t end up stopping working until 2pm (one thing after another cropped up) so I eventually just ran to the nearest shop for a filled baguette.
Maybe I’ll put the brakes on tomorrow, and sneak off to the pub for breakfast? The company I work for (for another fifty days at least) prides itself on letting us work from “anywhere” – so that includes the pub in town that does a cheap cooked breakfast and bottomless coffee, right?
Anyway.
It’s getting late. Time to go brush my teeth and get ready for bed.
